BND (5-Bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane) is an antimicrobial compound that is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi, including yeast. It works by oxidizing essential protein thiols, which inhibits enzyme activity and leads to the inhibition of microbial growth. BND has been commonly used as a preservative in immunoassay reagents.
